Teachers

Our teachers are all qualified CELTA or above to teach English as a foreign language. They have worked with people from all over the world with a wide range of language abilities. Collectively our teachers have worked with students with more than 100 different languages.

Action Language   Nicola Brooks is an experienced ESOL teacher having spent 9 years teaching in Spain and at International House in Newcastle before joining Action Language as project manager in October 2015. Under Nicola’s management Action Language is continuing to develop and grow and provide a range of classes to students with over 115 different nationalities.
Action Language   Libby Selman is an extremely experienced ESOL teacher, having taught both in the UK and abroad. She also works for Trinity College, London, spending several weeks each year abroad examining candidates. She has been with Action Language as a teacher since September 2008 and takes responsibility for the pre-Entry class.
Action Language   Ruth Colclough Ruth taught EFL in Budapest in Hungary for four years, before returning to the UK and starting work at Newcastle College where she taught ESOL and then Numeracy for ten years. Her specialism is ESOL Numeracy, which she has been teaching at Action Language as a volunteer since September 2011. In February 2013 she started working part-time at Action Foundation as ESOL Administrator and now works full-time – her duties include being Course Leader for ESOL for Work, and organising Skills for Life ESOL exams for our students.
Action Language   Paddy Harrigan is a retired NHS consultant and has worked with Action Language since the start of the project in 2008. He initially came as a volunteer classroom assistant but became so interested in teaching English that he enrolled on the CELTA course at Newcastle College and now teaches some of our beginners classes.
Action Language   Fiona Stanley Fiona gained her CELTA qualification in 1997 and since then she's taught English at an international school in Bangalore, and Business English in Poland. She has also taught in language schools in the UK. In 2012 she went back to Bangalore to teach English at a charity school for children from slum areas. Fiona has also worked in management positions in the FE sector and for the awarding body NCFE.
Action Language   Christine Hartas Christine has 39 years' qualified teaching experience in primary and secondary schools in the North East. She has spent 15 years as Head of Learning Support in a local Comprehensive, organising provision for Special Educational Needs, and for students with English as a 2nd language. She has taught literacy, numeracy, and many other curriculum subjects to the secondary age group.
Action Language   Maggie Perry After she retired from full-time work as a charity manager, Maggie took the CELTA course at Newcastle College. Since then, she has been volunteering at Action Foundation, first as a Classroom Assistant and now as a teacher. She currently teaches the Entry 3 class.
